South Africa's government is set to revolutionise its travel process with the rollout of an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system. Announced by Minister of Tourism Patricia De Lille, the digital visa system aims to streamline and secure short-term visa applications, enhancing the ease with which international tourists can visit the country.

The ETA system, which is scheduled to be implemented by the end of September 2025, is part of a larger strategy by the South African government to boost international tourism. According to De Lille, the initiative will help position South Africa as an accessible and competitive global destination while also contributing to economic growth.

"We are also unlocking access to our destination. Following the launch of the Trusted Tour Operators Scheme in India and China, our Department of Home Affairs will soon, before the end of September, roll out the Electronic Travel Authorisation system", said De Lille.

"This will digitalise and automate all short-stay visas, enabling secure and seamless travel for tourists across the globe", she added.

A Strategic Boost for Tourism and Investment

Speaking at the G20 Tourism Investment Summit, De Lille emphasised the significant role that tourism plays in South Africa's economy. She revealed that the tourism sector accounts for 8.5% of the country's GDP and shared impressive visitor statistics.

"Tourism contributes at least 8.5% to South Africa’s GDP. In July alone, South Africa welcomed over 880,000 visitors, which is a 26% increase compared to last year. Behind these numbers are livelihoods, families, and communities", De Lille said.

The Minister also highlighted the financial opportunities within the tourism sector, noting that South African tourism startups have attracted significant venture capital investment. From 2019 to 2024, these startups received over $39 million in venture capital, which represents more than half of the total investment in tourism solutions on the African continent.

"According to UN Tourism, South African startups attracted over $39 million in venture capital between 2019 and 2024", De Lille stated.

Strengthening Global Appeal

The introduction of the ETA system and other initiatives, such as the Trusted Tour Operators Scheme targeting travellers from India and China, aligns with South Africa's focus on attracting global visitors and investors. By simplifying visa processes and highlighting the country’s diverse tourism offerings, South Africa is positioning itself as a leader in the competitive global tourism market.

With the ETA system set to go live imminently, the government hopes to see a further increase in tourist numbers and economic benefits for the country’s communities and businesses. As De Lille’s statements suggest, this modernised approach to travel authorisation reflects South Africa’s commitment to growth, innovation, and accessibility.
